How Much?!? Aah, I'll Wait And Hope It Scabs Over

Texas is now allowing free-standing emergency rooms, which SOUNDS like a great idea -- instead of going to the hospital, you go to a less crowded, more convenient, luxury ER -- but in practice means very expensive treatment. Here's what's happening, and maybe this is a warning for those thinking the free market would make medical treatment cheaper: The ERs open in affluent areas where the owners figure everyone has insurance, and they don't tell you that they charge more. Then they charge more. Surprise! And if your insurance company balks at the high price, which it will, guess who has to cover the difference? The larger question is, how can the free market work to lower costs if your decision to go to get treatment is an emergency? It's not like you can shop around when you're bleeding profusely.
