The Penn State hazing death once again raises the question of why hazing exists, and this column by a guy who made a movie about it asserts that it serves a primal human need for being part of a tribe and engaging the fight-or-flight impulse, and surviving a hazing gives the survivor the sense of achievement. Does that sound plausible to you? Did you feel that need? Speaking for myself, I was happy not to join a frat (my college had none) and I never felt the need to join, haze, or be hazed. Maybe I'm an outlier, though. (USA Today)
