A Lot More Memorable Than 'Click It Or Ticket,' That's For Sure

Any time I've told people from out of town that we have traffic signs that merely depict, without words except for one -- CAUTION, a family of three running, meant to warn drivers of the possibility of immigrants dashing in front of their vehicles, they don't believe me, but we do have them, visible along the 5 and 15 freeways as you drive through North County San Diego (like through Camp Pendleton). I should put that all in past tense, though, since tall but one of the signs are gone, and that one won't be replaced when it wears out. Why? Because people stole or vandalized the signs, and, frankly, you don't see families running across the border much anymore. Despite what President Trump wants you to believe so you'll pay in advance for his Great Wall, the number of illegal crossings into the U.S. along the San Diego sector of the border has dwindled to about 5% of what it was back in the day. Most illegal immigration occurs when people enter legally and just overstay the allowable time. But the signs are still iconic in Southern California, even if they, too, have overstayed their time.
