R.I.P. Herbert T. Gillis, Independent Retail Grocer

Now, you may think, initially, that this story about how small town groceries are becoming extinct is about Walmart killing them, or Amazon. Nope. What's killing them is age -- the stores are still viable, but the owners are aging out and can't find anyone who's interested in buying them. And once they're gone, you get towns where you have to drive 40 or more miles to the next decently stocked grocery. This is not a good sign for these towns. (New York Times)
