Wait, I Thought Winning WAS Everything
-
The Florida high school has won seven state titles in the past eight seasons, but, a few months ago, the state high school athletic association found that three players were ineligible and they had to forfeit the entire regular season (but not, weirdly, the state title). And now the entire baseball coaching staff has been fired, which is highly controversial with the school community. But it also raises a question of whether some schools prize winning sports teams over everything else, and why. We've all seen the too-into-it adults turning youth sports into practically professional operations, and recruitment of players from other districts purely to boost the team's standing. Again, why? And if you're a parent, is rooting for the high school team more important than resources for your kid's education? (South Florida Sun-Sentinel)
