A few years back -- 2014 -- very rich woman Alice Rogoff, who'd fallen in love with Alaska, paid $34 million for the Anchorage Daily News, the state's largest paper. Everyone told her she was crazy. And she changed the paper's name to Alaska Dispatch News and bought a new press and it turned out that she WAS crazy to think it could work, and so the paper has been sold in bankruptcy for $1 million (there was only one bidder), and the judge in the case has basically said he doesn't even see how the paper can survive, period. There ARE papers managing to keep their print products afloat and make decent money online, but more cities are going to end up like Anchorage, with zero chance to keep the paper going. That's not good for democracy. (Los Angeles Times)
