We'd Be Better Off With Numbers. Just Don't Name Your Kid 69
-
You may know Nigel Planer as Neil the Hippie on "The Young Ones" (and if you don't, and like absurdist comedy, go find that show; it was so funny and weird and wonderful). And he wrote this op-ed for The Guardian musing about how, because of controversial right-wing politician Nigel Farage, nobody in England is naming their kids "Nigel" any more. Which is fine with Nigel Planer, who thinks "Nigel" is a terrible name and has all sorts of facts about its derivation (from the French) to back his contention up. As someone who's never liked my own name ("Perry"? Really? What's it short for? Nothing? Weak), I can identify with this, even if there's no infamous Perry about whom to be embarrassed. So... do you like your own name? How did you come up with your kids' names? What's in a name, anyway? (The Guardian)
