Even The McDonald's Drive-Thru Has Humans At The Window
-
A restaurant chain has been trying to bring back the Automat, but with vegan food and with practically all human intervention stripped away: the cooks are behind walls, you order at a terminal and get your bowls through vending machine doors, and it's all cold and labor-light and supposed to be the future of dining. Except that they've had to close several of their locations, because it turns out people don't want a robotic dining experience. Even Automats weren't that cold; you got your cherry pie through a coin-operated door, yes, but (and I am old enough to remember this) you DID see the kitchen through the doors, and there WERE wait staff to clean tables and check on you and serve coffee. It wasn't totally inhuman. Maybe there's hope for us that people rejected the revamped concept. (Washington Post)
