Visit L.A.! Sun! Sand! Stars! Stench!
-
The headline seems right out of a tourism brochure: "New rules aim to keep stench of rotting meat and carcasses out of L.A. neighborhoods." Come visit! The stink is possibly going to be brought under control soon, maybe! As it turns out, it's about the residential neighborhoods that unfortunately find themselves downwind of rendering plants in the Vernon area -- Vernon is a town, a tiny pocket of L.A. County that's mostly industrial buildings, so it doesn't really matter as much to Vernon's few residents (just over a hundred) as it does to the people in adjacent areas where they can't do anything about it. But they're trying, with laws like the ones proposed this time by the regional air quality board. It's like the battles over sewage treatment plants (never believe them when they say they don't produce noxious odors): there's a reason nobody wants these things in theyr back yards.
