This New York Times op-ed explains how the GOP tax bills will cause a massive tax increase for one particular category of Americans: graduate students. That's because it both removes the deductibility of student loan interest AND treats their scholarships and teaching positions the students work for them as income, which leads to huge taxes without the actual income to pay it. You may think, good, get a REAL job, but graduate students are the folks who do the research that leads to good things for society, and they're the people who ultimately get jobs that make more money and generate a lot more in tax money than others. So this screws the grad students AND the economy AND the public. That seems inadvisable. (New York Times)
