And A Whole Lot Of Drive-Over Country In Between
-
This article purports to explain why, for many years, there's been a sign in Ocean City, MD at the beginning of US 50 that says "Sacramento CA 3073," which would be the mileage to the western terminus of the cross-country highway if, indeed, the distance WAS 3,073 miles. It isn't. And the article explains away the reason for the sign as a "moment of whimsy," which is a disappointing explanation. The same (wrong) distance appears on a sign in Sacramento: "Ocean City MD 3073." In any event, they're saying that the distance will be revised once a more accurate reading is obtained, which shouldn't take this long. And this 2016 article explains the story better: a Caltrans manager saw the sign in Ocean City and decided, what the hell, let's reciprocate. So he did. And the original? A Maryland highway engineer's idea. They still don't explain WHY he did it, but at least we know WHO did it. (WTOP/Washington; KXJZ (Capital Public Radio)/Sacramento)
