When Algorithms Fail

A problem nobody saw coming with the Southern California wildfires: Waze and Google Maps sending people to roads in the fire zones or where emergency vehicles need to access the fires. Officials say that by helping people get around the closed roads and traffic jams, they're creating secondary jams that block residential streets and make things more difficult for fire trucks; they're also blissfully unaware when fire is threatening a road and might be a danger. And, really, if you're driving and there's fire in front of you, are you going to listen to Waze or your own instincts and get the hell out of there? On the other hand, when you're fleeing, you want all the help you can get, so what are you SUPPOSED to do? (Daily Breeze, Torrance)
