For The Right Amount Of Money, I'd Commute Anywhere
-
You think you have a long commute? You think those people who commute two hours each way to Silicon Valley or downtown L.A. are crazy? Meet a nurse at a Kaiser hospital in Oakland who commutes from Pennsylvania. Yeah, Oakland, California, not Oakland, New Jersey or the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. That's 2,600 miles each way, and he does it (by plane, of course) every other week. He works really long shifts -- it's gotten better, though, with 12-hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday every week and then 12-hour shifts every other weekend -- so he stays in a trailer in Oakland and has a house near Pittsburgh with a new $160,000 swimming pool. Why would he do that? Because the pay for nurses in California is so high -- higher than some doctors make in Pennsylvania -- that by doing this, he takes home more money than he would if he lived in California full-time, and that includes the cost of the plane commute. He's been doing this for nine years. How extreme a commute would you accept for the money? (San Francisco Chronicle)
