I did not know it was at issue how people look when they're sick, but research shows that humans are especially attuned to notice very subtle clues about illness in others -- you see slight changes in people's skin tone, eyes, and mouth, and you can tell they're ill. Other species tend to use smell to diagnose illness, but we see it in people's faces. So if you think someone looks sick, they may very well BE ill. (Washington Post)
