Call It A Work-Release Program

The public schools in Alexander, ND are going to go to a four-day week, already a success in another town, this change prompted by a student project to convince the school board that this would make sense. The way they do it is that they stretch out the school days with longer periods, thus freeing up the fifth day for tutoring. And, yes, it DOES make sense, even if they didn't lengthen the school periods. Let's face it, school time is a lot of boredom and wasted time, and some kids could do better on independent study while ALL kids are happier and more motivated if they're in school less. The only downside is for parents who use schools as a form of day care. They're out of luck on the fifth day. (KXMB-TV/Bismarck; Thanks to Jim Walsh at KACL (Cool 98.7)/Bismarck for the link)
