Progress, sort of: California is testing out digital license plates. Digital? Yeah, they're LCD screens that display your number, and if you're asking why you'd need that, you're asking the right question. They'll be capable of displaying other messages, like "STOLEN," if the DMV gives the OK, but for now, they really just show the number. They'll sell (through car dealers only, as an option) for $699 plus installation and a monthly $7 fee, all to do what a metal plate can do for, well, a lot less. (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
