In case you were wondering how the ballot measure, now qualified for the November ballot, to split California into three states looks from here inside the state itself, it's as much of a stretch as it seems to everyone else. It would create more problems than it solves, from requiring treaties for water to loading at least one of the new states with more than its share of poverty. Nobody really asked for this besides one very rich venture capital guy from Silicon Valley who keeps pushing this, and residents of the far northern reaches of the state who feel underrepresented. It's the longest of long shots and it wouldn't really benefit too many people, but it's what happens when you can get anything on the ballot if you get enough signatures. (Los Angeles Times)
