As Goes The School, Goes The Post Office, The Police Station, The Grocery...

This is an interesting piece on rural towns where the only school in town closes, part of a wave of rural school closings that are increasingly hurting those towns; losing the only school tends to prompt other businesses to go away. The dwindling, aging population, though, can't support schools, so what's a state supposed to do, prop them up financially? Or are we hurtling towards a day when schooling is over the Internet because it's too expensive to keep up the Little Red Schoolhouse and young people fled for bigger cities long ago? Is small town America sustainable at all anymore? (New York Times)
