On the extremely endangered list: the good ol' ash baseball bat. That used to be the standard, the white bat that everyone used, but there are two major reasons for the dwindling number of ash bats: many major leaguers switched to maple and yellow birch (and youth/college players use aluminum), and the emerald ash borer is killing off the ash trees. The only people left buying ash bats are traditionalists and low-level amateur players who want to save money. End of an era. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
