We Can't Make You Safer. That Would Be Unsafe
-
You know those batting helmet flaps you now see a lot in the major leagues? Youth baseball league players can't wear them. Why? Believe it or not, safety. It's not that the C-flaps -- that's what they're called -- are unsafe. No, it's that they're basically screwed onto the helmets, and the helmets themselves are approved by some official safety panel but the flaps are not. Why don't they just change the rule? Because rules are rules, basically. There will eventually be pre-approved helmets with flaps, but for now, the kids are on their own. (USA Today)
