You Can Duck, But That's Probably Not Gonna Help
-
An overpass in Michigan has been there since the 1950s, but only recently have trucks and other vehicles been regularly ramming into the overpass. It's happened about a dozen times this year, enough to get police to beef up patrols, but even with cop cars on hand, someone ran a modular home on a trailer into the bridge. They require permits for any loads higher than 13-1/2 feet and the clearance is 14 feet; the latest to hit the bridge was 14-1/2 feet and without a permit. They don't know why this is happening now, although they're guessing that there are more inexperienced truck drivers on the road. But they hope it won't matter for long; there's a plan to spend $10 million and replace the bridge with a new one with 16 feet clearance. Bet they'll find a lot of 17-foot trucks coming by after that. (WOOD-TV/Grand Rapids)
