You Don't Create The Rat Pack. The Rat Pack Just Happens

Things become iconic in an organic manner. Going into something trying to create "iconic" is the same as trying to create a "viral video" -- things happen on their own, not because you try to make them happen in an unnatural manner. And so we have Las Vegas trying to make lightning strike twice with a new Welcome to Las Vegas sign downtown. The one you know -- the one way down at the southern end of the strip -- became an icon because people eventually embraced its retro style. This new one, with two showgirls and a script "Las Vegas," tries way too hard. But we can revisit this in, say, 20 years and see if it takes hold. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
