Why traditional media is in trouble: Advertisers forced content providers to "pivot to video" because they like the certainty that people will be forced to see the pre-roll ads. YouTube's view counts are being gamed by companies that, for a price, will deliver "views" using bots. No matter what YouTube tries to thwart the paid views, the companies that sell them are finding ways around it. So it's fake, yet advertisers don't insist on proof real people actually watched the video, so that's how ad money is being spent and that's what people use to determine if someone or something is "popular." The culture's being sold. (New York Times)
