Can The Horse Appeal?
-
Nice try, but lawyers were unable to convince an Oregon judge, who ruled that an abused horse can't sue its owner. The horse's attorneys -- yes, it had attorneys, through the Animal Legal Defense Fund -- wanted to recover what will be lifetime medical costs, which weren't covered by the restitution ordered when the owner was convicted. And that raises an interesting issue: Who SHOULD pay? And how do you get them to do it? Sue? Aha, you're back at the idea that the horse should be able to sue. Which the judge ruled against, because horses aren't people. But how do you resolve a blatant case of animal abuse like this? (The Oregonian/OregonLive.com)
