How important to the local economy are pro sports teams? You'd think they were major players, and cities pour money into stadiums to attract or keep them, but they're really not major economic drivers. Here's one example: The San Diego Padres got a ballpark out of the city, but the city's craft beer industry generates triple the revenue that the Padres generate, even in an off year. But nobody's suggesting taxpayers pay for building new breweries, are they? (San Diego Union-Tribune)
