Promise You'll Never Ever Say 'Shrimp On The Barbie' Again

Here's a column by an Australian journalist telling Americans and British people that we can't do a decent Australian accent, and, of course, she's right. But her point can be applied to any accent. It's really hard to do an authentic American accent if you're not American -- for every Hugh Laurie who nails it, there are a lot of hacks overstressing "R" sounds. Americans doing British accents sound like... Americans doing British accents. We can't even do our own countries' regional accents all that well, tending to drop back to stereotypes instead of getting the nuances right. (Really, Jersey isn't New York, Philly isn't Jersey, Baltimore is... okay, Balmer is Philly except you say "hon" a lot. And my accent is somewhere between Jersey, Philly, and California with the rough spots ironed out a little. Try imitating THAT.) (New York Times)
