She Wants To Believe
-
This article follows two people. One of them is a guy, a liberal satirist, who posts outlandish, obviously fake stories on the Internet, the kind that most people would see as a joke right away (like saying Bill Clinton was a serial killer, that California has instituted Sharia law, and that Michelle Obama and Chelsea Clinton flipped Trump off during the national anthem, complete with a picture that "identifies" Hope Hicks and Omarosa as Michelle and Chelsea). The other is a woman in Pahrump, NV who believes it all. She's 76, she's a Trump supporter, and she looks at anything that's negative about Trump's opponents as true, or true enough -- she knows some of it might not be accurate, but she's learned to distrust the mainstream media and fact-checkers. She gets her "news" from Facebook. She believes there must be some truth in those conspiracy theories about Soros the (underage) Nazi and the Parkland "paid actors." She's not alone; I see it in my own Facebook feed, people who should know better just sharing fake stories without checking them out at all. This is America, 2018. (Washington Post)
