It's obvious: Sitting long hours at your desk is hazardous to your health and standing desks are a fine solution. Except that it's not true: Some research indicates that the hazards of sitting are overblown and standing desks are overrated as a solution, because standing is not exercise and is not going to do much of anything for your health. Turns out that those studies telling us we need to stand didn't factor in other risk factors that play a role, and didn't consider that maybe the sitting around is a symptom of problems but not necessarily a cause. If you like a standing desk, they say, go ahead and use one; it won't hurt you. But it won't do much for you, either. (New York Times)
