You'll Probably Burn Enough Gas To Make Up The Difference, But Whatever

Beware the Soda Tax: Philadelphia slapped a big tax on sweetened beverages. People predictably began to shop for food across the city line in nearby suburbs to save money. One result: The only full supermarket in one area of lower-income West Philly, a Shop-Rite, is closing, citing a 20% drop in revenue. The mayor says that the store owner is just making the tax the scapegoat, and cites one study saying that the tax hasn't hurt sales across the city, but it would be different for a store in, say, Center City, which is sufficiently far from the city borders to make trekking out to a suburban Wegmans or Acme a pain, than it would be for a store like this one that's near a border so people can just drive a few more minutes and save a few bucks.
