A new scientific paper claims that bees can do basic math, demonstrating by their behavior after being trained (you can train bees?) that they can add and subtract. This might mean that insects are smarter than we thought, and it follows a study last year that bees understand the concept of "nothing." There are explanations for how the researchers can tell all of this. Not sure what to do with this knowledge, but it will definitely come to mind next time you swat at a bee. (Washington Post)
