Honestly, We Can Live Without 'Em
-
For the sixth season, much of the Los Angeles area can't get most Dodger games on TV. It's because what is now Charter/Spectrum (then Time Warner Cable) handed the team $8.35 billion over 25 years for the TV rights, then tried to strongarm competing cable and satellite companies into forcing all customers -- whether they wanted the channel or not -- to pay big fees for one Dodgers channel. Nobody bit, and so no Dodgers unless a) you live in an area served by Spectrum and b) you subscribe. They buy time for 10 games on broadcast TV, but other than that and some national games on Fox and ESPN, nothing. Attendance is fine, but I wonder if they lose something on merch. When they were in the World Series, you wouldn't know it around town. And, no, where I live, I have no (legal) option to get the games, because it's a non-Spectrum area. Good thing I'm a Phillies fan anyway. (Los Angeles Times)
