Because it's always an interesting if cringe-worthy topic, here's an article from the BBC on when anesthesia wears off during surgery. One in 20 patients wakes up during surgery, but most don't remember it, because the anesthesia itself has amnesiac qualities. I DO remember waking up during procedures, TWICE (once when they were working on my head, which was quite interesting). Didn't get traumatized, though. Once, just woke up, thought, "hmm, they're still working on me, that's weird," and fell back under when they upped the dose; the other time, I woke up just as they were finishing, and thought, "oh, good, almost done." So my stories suck. Maybe you or your listeners can do a lot better. (BBC)
