Either Way, He's Gotten A Life Sentence
-
Here's an interesting question: Should someone arrested on drug and gun charges not be tried for the offenses if, while being arrested, he ended up paralyzed from the neck down for life? That's exactly the issue involved in the case of a man whose neck was broken during his arrest -- his attorney says the cops did it, the cops claim he fell while he was running -- and the attorney contends that a) his client can't come to court, considering that he's confined to a hospital bed forever, and b) his permanent state is punishment enough. Complication: The man is suing the cops, and there will be a civil trial later this year. So, do they try him on the criminal charges or let it go? Does the degree of gravity of the charges make a difference? (NJ Advance Media/NJ.com)
