Sorry, Kids, Might As Well Get Started Early On Dreading School Days
-
When I went to kindergarten in Wayne, NJ, it was a half day and it was pretty useless other than acclimating us to going to school; all I remember was getting cookies and milk and nap time. But things have changed, and now, over 50 years later, Wayne is rolling out full-day kindergarten, at a cost of $4.2 million. It's the last district in the county to go to full-day kindergarten. Apparently, kindergarten is more instructional now, and teachers use it to identify kids' learning abilities and disabilities. I wonder if that's too early for all-day schooling for some kids, but I would have welcomed it at that age. Sitting around playing with blocks bored the hell out of me. (Bergen Record)
