It's probably true, as the manufacturer and the FDA say in advising people who have hackable implanted cardiac defibrillators, that the benefits of just leaving the devices in your body outweigh the risks. It's unlikely that someone WILL take advantage of the lack of encryption to do harm. Still, how did they make those things with wide open wireless? I mean, sure, it makes control of heartbeats by doctors easier, but even your home Wi-Fi has better encryption. You'd think.... (NBC News)
