Money Trumps Truth, But You Knew That
-
This Bloomberg article tells you what you sort of already knew: YouTube knows and has always known that its own algorithm promotes conspiracy theory and alt-right videos with false claims -- from birthers to white supremacy -- yet won't do much about it, with the idea that a) it's free speech (even though a private company has every right to police its content) and b) being proactive might set them up for trouble if they miss anything, because if they DON'T exercise control, they can claim protection under the law that makes the platforms not responsible for the content users post there. The bottom line: Clicks and views lead to more money, and money is more important to them than the effect on society. They do not care that people are using their platform to spread hate and lies. They do not care that their platform may lead people astray, or to do terrible things. The only thing they care about is money. (Bloomberg)
