Your Best Laid Plans Are Doomed Anyway, So Relax
-
I keep telling people this, and finally I have an article agreeing with me that travel is a LOT less stressful if you plan less. Really. If you plan everything in advance, things can and will go wrong, and when they do, it's a domino effect. If you book just enough -- the flight, the hotel, the car -- and just wing the rest, you're better off. One exception from experience: If you're going to a major tourist destination and plan to go to sites like museums that are ticketed, buy the tickets in advance online. Trust me on that. When we strolled into the Colosseum or the Uffizi without spending a second on the interminable queue of the people who waited to buy tickets on site, I knew that was the way to go. On the other hand, I've waited until the last second for sports tickets on the road and managed to pick up spectacular seats (third row for NBA games!) at fire sale prices when scalpers had to unload their stock once the game started.
