Oh, THAT Complicity In Human Rights Abuses. Here, Have A Cookie
-
Everyone said "Never Forget." Unfortunately, they're forgetting. Take the 25-year-old heiress to the Bahlsen cookie fortune in Germany who blew off the idea that her company used slaves during World War II (yes, it's called "forced labor" but that's slavery, folks). She told a newspaper that the company was "guilty of nothing," that the slaves were treated "well," and hey, it was before her time and the lawsuits by the former laborers were dismissed (because of a statute of limitations, that is). This was, incidentally, a response to criticism after she announced that she wants to "make money and buy yachts." Now, she's apologizing and saying she needs to learn more about her family's past. But the fact that she made it to 25 years old (and owning a quarter of the company) downplaying the impact of forced labor points to both a gap in education and an absence of empathy. She's far from alone. (CNN)
