They'll Just Find Some Other Reason To Discriminate. They Always Do
-
This column notes that while Massachusetts is considering becoming the second state to ban it, in most states, weight discrimination is legal. You can immediately guess the issues here. But while, yes, some people could lose weight, some people can't -- you get the body that you're born to get. Some people got heavier due to illness or injury (raises hand). And however someone gets heavier, is it an employer's place to say that's a reason not to hire or to keep someone from ascending the ranks? Besides, even for places like casinos who want all of their floor employees to be rail-thin, isn't that assuming the public wants that? Maybe some people like larger folks. Anyway, you know all the arguments; should there be a law? (Washington Post)
