A Dog's Breakfast. Literally
-
A hoarder in Detroit died, and her body was found in her kitchen, eaten by dogs and rats. If you're wondering how this could happen and nobody knew how she was living, here's how: At some point, she and her sister, living in the same house in which they grew up, closed the blinds, shut the doors, and took delivery of food and wouldn't let anyone in. They kept family and friends out. And the questions were fended off by little things: The lawn was kept trimmed, the house was painted, the sisters were always dressed and made up well enough. People just didn't know what was going on inside the house. And when their cousin suspected something was up, the police said that, absent evidence of something bad happening (like blood stains), they couldn't break in. It's a sad and fascinating story of a mental illness that is hard to explain and could be happening with someone in your life right now. Would you recognize the clues? (Detroit Free Press)
