Just The Same, A Hose Probably Couldn't Hurt
-
If you live in a fire zone, or seen a wildfire on TV, you've probably thought, why don't they just put sprinklers in all of the houses, or some kind of water thing to put the fire out before it reaches homes? That's a very dumb-talk-radio-caller approach, it turns out; in this article, a rich couple who spent $75,000 on an elaborate sprinkler system to protect their Pacific Palisades mansion was told by a real expert that the $75,000 is practically worthless. Why? Because a) the only REAL defense is if everyone in the neighborhood and beyond takes preventative measures like clearing brush and debris and putting space between plants, and b) high winds will blow embers onto your roof and set things aflame before you know it anyway. So, clear that brush and limit that plant life. (Los Angeles Times)
