As we discussed last week, we've entered a new era where utilities in fire-prone areas are shutting off power, ostensibly to protect against power lines causing wildfires. But it's worse than that: The possibility that relatively new main transmission lines sparked the latest fires means that the utilities are incompetent in their construction and installation of lines to the extent that the primary power distribution lines are compromised, and shutting THOSE down will mean longer, more widespread outages and longer times to restore power. Can this economy sustain extended, widespread outages caused by utility incompetence or negligence? And if it's true, as they say here, that it'll be a decade before any improvement, what does that say for California's future? (Washington Post)
