The helicopter crash that killed Kobe and Gigi Bryant and seven others brought attention to something that's common among the rich but relatively unnoticed by the rest of us: Rich and famous people like to commute by private helicopter, because they skip traffic and because they can. Now, despite the tragedy in Calabasas, it should be noted that accidents are not common, relative to the number of flights. Still, as a member of the I'll-never-go-up-in-one-of-those-things community, I cringe thinking about taking a chopper anywhere, let alone in busy skies during rush hour. Is the risk worth saving the time? Because if price is no object, you can choose between a two hour limo ride or a half hour in the air, with the latter being something of a risk. (New York Times)
