I'm including this story about a police standoff at a gas station not because of the hours-long incident itself but for how it ended: The cops just left. They were at a stalemate, guns drawn, for hours and hours, locking down the neighborhood, and then... they drove away. Why? Because it turned out that the guy in the car, who was acting erratically, had called them out himself, and they realized that he wasn't armed and wasn't really doing anything they could arrest him for. So they left. You watch a police standoff, you expect a more exciting ending than that. (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
