Nothing To Do, Nowhere To Go

This story is about what it's like on Catalina Island right now, and if you're not familiar with Catalina, a primer: It's a massive mountainous island 26 miles off the L.A. coast, but with one small town with a few thousand full-time residents and another small harbor where it's usually just boaters dropping anchor for a night. Oh, and some buffalo. Anyway, it's a popular quick getaway from L.A. but with the coronavirus, it's now closed to visitors. The residents do have their essential businesses open -- that pretty much means the Vons grocery and the post office -- but the boats to the mainland are down to twice a day. They're REALLY isolated. Is this a good place to be during the pandemic or would the double isolation -- stuck in the house AND 26 miles of ocean from the rest of the world -- be maddening? (Los Angeles Times)
