Sometimes A Friendly Voice Works Wonders
-
An article for the times is this one offering tips on how to go about checking in on a friend or loved one who's clearly not okay, especially when none of us are entirely okay right now. It's tough, because the very act of asking someone if they're okay can be a problem. And if YOU'RE distressed, you might end up hurting yourself with a conversation like that. The tips involve asking open-ended, non-judgmental questions, sharing a little about your own troubles to indicate you're in the same boat, don't expect to fix things (that's my biggest issue; I want to fix the problems even when I can't), and follow up. If you want to "be there for" someone, it can be tricky to pull it off. (New York Times)
