SoFi Stadium, the new home of the Rams and Chargers, cost $5 billion to build. It will, due to the pandemic, of course, open without fans in the seats, and we don't know when fans will be able to attend. Which raises the question also raised by the NBA bubble games and MLB and MLS and the NHL and Premier League: In 2020, do you really even NEED a stadium like that? At some point, could someone start a rival pro sports league that plays in made-for-TV simple venues, no stands, just adequate lights and camera angles? Because the real money's in the TV contracts, and the tickets and luxury boxes come with big expenses. One complex, a dozen teams, all made for TV. Could that work? (Los Angeles Times)
