We're Going To Get More 'Sixth Borough' Stories Now, Aren't We?
-
The pandemic has changed people's perceptions of where to live for various reasons, like that if you're working from home, you can live anywhere, or that some cities handled the crisis better than others, or that finding a cheaper place to live might be a good idea. And so something that we talked about years ago is back with actual research showing thousands of people moving from New York to Philadelphia, about 90 miles away and an entirely different market. Why are they doing that? Lots of new, cheaper apartments in a real city with real city amenities, and if you need to get to New York or D.C., the train will get you there in a reasonable time. So there's that, with one caveat: Both Philly and New York are seeing another exodus, to the suburbs, because rents and taxes are higher where you can walk to stuff. (Suggestion: Check out the Main Line, where you can find suburban prices but walk to shops and restaurants and the train into the city. Worked for me.) (KYW-TV/Philadelphia)
