Reporting Ain't What It Used To Be
-
How easy is it to dupe the media? A recent story about the defunct Woolworths chain returning to life in the U.K. was patently untrue. It was also created by a 17-year-old student who merely created a Twitter account and posted a typo-filled announcement. That's all it took. It was an experiment to see the reaction of brand-loyal fans, but took in editors at several outlets. Mind you, this was an unverified (no blue check) account with about 1,000 followers, and somehow writers and editors took it at face value with no follow-up, no investigation, no actual reporting. That's the state of the news media in 2020. (The Guardian)
