There Are Easier Ways To Get Attention, You Know
-
You see tons of feel-good human interest stories, and I wonder when you turn from accepting them at face value to skepticism. Take the recent case of a woman from the Valley who was said to have disappeared during a hike in Zion National Park, then was found after an emotional plea by her daughter on the local L.A. news; the story went that the hiker hit her head, then found a water source and survived on that. But the story's falling apart, with family members talking about her having a mental breakdown, and others noting inconsistencies with both her story and her condition after allegedly being injured and dehydrated (and that water source is toxic due to algae, so....). And now, some are thinking she staged the disappearance as a GoFundMe scam. If it turns out to have been a scam, does this make you just that much more hardened against charity in these cases?
